As
we all know, Dokdo belongs to Korea. However,
Japan still doesn¡¯t admit the island as a Korean territory. What do you think
we can do to stop them? Back in 1980s, a brave man named Choi Jong-duk
moved to Dokdo to show Japan that the island belongs to Korea. Let¡¯s
review his story.
¡°I heard that there is a very beautiful island in the East Sea called
¡°Dokdo¡±.¡±
Choi Jong-duk always wanted to go to Dokdo, because he often saw fishermen who fish there.
When he grew up, he became a fisherman, too.
¡°Dokdo has wonderful scenery. It will be great to live on the island,¡±
Choi thought. So, he moved to Dokdo with his wife and five female divers. Since he planned
to go back to his hometown in a few years,
he built a small house which was made out of soil.
Choi and
the people who moved with him started to get used to the life in Dokdo.
And, they liked to live on the island. Meanwhile, they heard the
news that Japanese claimed that Dokdo belonged to Japan. Choi and
people were very furious about it. After all,
they had decided to settle down in Dokdo to protect
it.
¡°I should protect this island!¡± Choi declared. On October 14, 1982,
Choi finally brought the rest of his family to
Dodkdo, and changed his address to Dokdo.
¡°Dokdo historically belongs to Korea and our ancestors. There is no doubt
about it. It is ridiculous that Japan insists
Dokdo is their territory. I came here to exercise my rights as a Korean
citizen,¡± he said.
Even though he passed away
in 1987, his passion for Dokdo will last
forever. |
