Do
you have any siblings? Would you have been different if you had switched places with them?
What if you were the youngest, not the oldest? Or what if you were
the oldest, instead of the middle child?
Or what if your siblings were never born and you were the only child? It may be hard
to believe, but studies have shown that birth order influences your
personalities and level of
intelligence. So it¡¯s likely
that you would not be quite the same person if you were born in a
different order.
Now, new research has found that birth order also affects how you
work and your success! A study by researchers from Ghent University
in Belgium looked into the differences
between first- and second-born children and how they set and achieve goals.

The study found that first-born children try to improve their performance
at certain tasks. This is because first-borns don¡¯t have any siblings
to be compared to, at least for a short time. Thus, parents learn
about their progress based on that child¡¯s previous performances. This
allows first-borns to self-reflect when they make goals.
Meanwhile,
second-born children are more likely to focus on doing better than
others. According to researchers, this is because parents compare
second-borns to their older siblings. This encourages younger children
to measure themselves against others when they
set their goals.
¡°First-borns may be more motivated to learn, whereas second-borns may
be more motivated to win,¡± said the researchers. |
