Starting
from 1901, the Nobel Prize has been given to great people in the world
who contribute to the wellbeing of mankind every year. Alfred
Nobel, who established the Nobel Prize,
died on December 10, 1896, at the age of 63. That is why the prize
is awarded on December 10, the anniversary of Nobel's death,
every year.
Recently, an uncommon event happened. According to the Heritage Auction
in the United States, a winner¡¯s family will offer his diploma and gold medal for
sale at an auction on April 4. The bidding will start at $500,000.
It surprised the world because
a Nobel Prize is up for auction for the first time ever!
Who is the Nobel Prize winner? And what was it all about?
The winner¡¯s name is Francis Crick, who is well-known as a molecular biologist from
Britain. In 1953, he published a short paper with an American
geneticist, James D. Watson
in the British journal, Nature. The paper was titled Molecular Structure
of Nucleic Acids: A Structure for Deoxyribose Nucleic AcidÇÙ»êÀÇ ºÐÀÚ±¸Á¶:
µð¿Á½Ã¸®º¸ÇÙ»êÀÇ ±¸Á¶. Together, Crick and Watson revealed for the first time
the fact that a double helix structure carries
genomic information as well as the blueprint of DNA. As a result,
they and a fellow researcher, New Zealand-born English physicist and molecular biologist,
Maurice Wilkins, won the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1962.
Kindra Check,
Crick¡¯s granddaughter, said in an interview with Heritage Auctions,
¡°My Granddad was honored to have received the Nobel Prize, but he
was not the type to display his awards; his office walls contained
a large chalkboard, artwork and a
portrait of Charles Darwin.¡±
She added, ¡°By auctioning his Nobel it will finally be made available
for public display and be well looked after. Our hope is that, by
having it available for display, it can be an inspiration to the next generation
of scientists.¡± |
