Lions are the kings of beasts. Lions are also known as fierce animals. So, most people are afraid of them. This is especially true for people in Kenya. Sadly, they always struggle to protect their farm animals, for example, goats, sheep, and cattle, from lions. One day, a boy named Richard Turere came up with an amazing idea that can scare away the lions!

Richard, a 13-year-old boy, has worked to keep livestock safe from lions since he was 11 years old. But it was never easy. Although he made a fire and set up scarecrows, it didn¡¯t work. He considered lions to be very clever. Then one day, Richard found that lions were scared of a moving light. When he walked around with a flashlight, no lion came close to him. Therefore, he invented a special system called ¡°Lion Lights.¡±

The lights were designed to blink on and off. The light bulbs were connected to a switch box and obtained electronic power from a solar panel or an old car battery. After that, domestic animals were no longer attacked by lions, and thus ¡°Lion Lights¡± became popular for livestock owners in Kenya. Currently, there are 75 Lion Lights installed in Kenya.

Recently, Richard attended the TED 2013 conference held in Long Beach, California and presented his invention and story, as well as his dream, in front of an audience of 1,500 people. He said he wanted to be a pilot or a plane engineer when he grows up. Let¡¯s give him a big round of applause for his talent. You will be able to realize your dream, genius inventor!
