We
celebrate several holidays throughout the year. What is your favorite?
Maybe Children¡¯s Day or Christmas because you get presents from your
parents? Or Lunar New Year's Day because you are given a little (or
a lot of) money? Easter may not be people¡¯s favorite holiday, but
for Christians, it is definitely
the most important. On this day, Christians celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
As the story goes, Jesus died on the cross and rose from the dead
three days later.
Unlike most holidays, Easter is celebrated on a different date every
year. It can fall anywhere between March
22 and April 25. This year, Christians all around the world celebrated
Easter on March 31(except Greek and Eastern Orthodox churches, who
celebrate it on May 5). So what do they do on this special day? Let¡¯s
take a look at some of the Easter traditions around the world!
In
most English-speaking countries, both children and adults spend time
decorating Easter eggs. On
Sunday morning, children traditionally go on a scavenger hunt and search
for the eggs, which have been hidden all over a church or a house,
or in a garden. The Easter bunny may also make
an appearance and give youngsters Easter baskets,
which are filled with chocolate eggs, chocolate rabbits, or marshmallow
chicks. Some families have a traditional Easter lunch or dinner, where
ham, turkey, or lamb is served.
In Nordic countries, an interesting
tradition is to read or watch murder mysteries at Easter. All major
television channels run detective and crime stories. New detective
novels are also published right before Easter. In parts of the Netherlands
and Northern Germany, fires are lit on Easter Sunday at sunset. Great
fires are also lit in Cyprus in schools or church-yards.
In South Korea, where almost 30 percent of the population is Christian,
most people attend church service with their families.
To our Christian readers, how did you celebrate Easter? Whatever you
did, we hope you had a Happy Easter! |
