Why Do Raccoons Have a Mask around Their Eyes?    [11-10-2013]
Untitled Document
Look at the picture. How cute! There is a cute raccoon in the picture. You can also see a mask around its eyes. It is raccoon¡¯s representative feature. Then, here is a question: why is there a black mask around the raccoon¡¯s eyes?

Above all, the mask helps with the raccoon¡¯s night vision. It reduces the amount of light glare that enters the eye. It is very important because they are mostly active at night.

Animals protect themselves by what is called protective coloring. It is very common for animals in the struggle for survival. Raccoons are fairly low down on the food chain. Therefore, they have to hide themselves from predators. The dark markings help them camouflage themselves from predators.

Aren¡¯t raccoons¡¯ masks cute and interesting? But, don¡¯t try to have raccoon¡¯s mask around your eyes. It will make them look like dark circles!
