Do
you like insects such as mantises, crickets and so on? We know
they would never hurt anyone. Most children are afraid of them because
of how they look. But some like to play them. What do you think? Insects
usually have six legs.
Recently, this six-legged thing appeared. Don¡¯t panic! It is a robot that
has six legs. What does it think it is doing?
The
six-legged walking robot has been created by a robot maker named Matt
Denton in Winchester, Hampshire, United Kingdom. It is called a Mantis
robot. It weighs 1,900kg and is 2.8m high. It is powered by a 2.2-liter
turbo diesel engine. A person can pilot the robot manually while sitting in
the cockpit or control it remotely. It is even able
to be used on an unpaved road or a rough mountain
road.
¡°This is definitely the largest hexapod
walking machine we have built so far,¡± said Denton. ¡°It¡¯s been called
an instant design classic and
an inspiring engineering project for the next generation. It is available now for private
hire, custom commissions, events, and sponsorship,¡± he added.
Its only weakness is that its walking
pace is slower than humans¡¯ because it can move only about one km
per hour. If you meet the machine by chance, you can ride on it with
help from an adult. You may feel as though you are actually a giant robot in a science fiction film. We
expect that it will be made good use of everywhere around the world. |
