When you plan to go on a picnic, or when you have a big event ahead of you, what do you check first? You might first check the weather forecast. Checking the weather forecast is an essential part of our daily lives. But who made the first weather forecast? It was a French astronomer named Urbain Jean Joseph Le Verrier (born in the 19th century).

Le Verrie liked to watch the sky since when he was little. This is how he could become an astronomer. In 1851, there was a huge exhibition held in London, England. Le Verrie looked around the exhibition. When he was on his way home, he suddenly stopped in front of a newspaper publisher. There was a large map of England hanging on the wall of the publisher. There were some curves drawn across the map.

¡°This is called ¡®a weather map¡¯. I drew this after I gathered information of each region¡¯s atmosphere pressure, temperature, and so on. But people were not that interested in this map,¡± explained a man who drew the map to Le Verrie. Le Verrie immediately demanded his government that there should be a weather forecasting station. At first, the French government rejected his proposal.

Meanwhile, a war occurred in France, and the government realized that they needed weather forecasting to win the war. They asked Le Verrie for help. He then collected information of about 250 regions¡¯ weather conditions from astrometeorologists throughout Europe. He then sent his government the information.

He made a great contribution to France¡¯s victory. Afterward, Le Verrie finally founded a weather bureau for the first time in France. That was the beginning of today¡¯s weather forecasting.
