Do
you like to watch movies? I¡¯m sure most of you do. Then, what¡¯s your
favorite movie? And who is
your favorite director? My favorite director
is Steven Spielberg! Have you seen the movie E.T ? The amazing film was directed by Steven
Spielberg! He also produced so many other famous movies including Jurassic
Park, Jaws, Man in Black, Transformers, and Indiana Jones and the
Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. This week, let¡¯s meet the three-time
Academy Award winner!
Steven Spielberg was born on December 18, 1947 in Ohio, U.S. As a
boy, Steven had a very active imagination. But he was not
a very good student. And he always had trouble with math. Also, he was very poor
at sports.
Young Steve liked to spend much time alone in
his room with the door closed. There, he developed an amazing sense
of imagination. And he liked to videotape his family. In fact, he was an amateur moviemaker and his family
supported him all the time.
Steven Spielberg was a warm-hearted boy. He always
wanted to help those less fortunate than himself. Sometimes,
he showed people his home-made films to raise money to help the disabled. He once fell
on purpose in a school lace
to let a mentally handicapped boy cross the line ahead of him.
After
graduating a high school in California, he applied to the University
of Southern California (USC) Cinema School twice. But he failed both times. His high
school grades were not high enough
to get in. But after Spielberg became famous, USC awarded him an honorary degree in 1994.
Steven Spielberg¡¯s actual career began when
he started working at Universal studios in LA as an unpaid intern and guest of the editing department. As an
intern, he made his first 24-minute short film Amblin in 1968.
Then, Spielberg became the youngest director ever to be signed to a long-term deal with
a major Hollywood studio.
Since then,
Steven Spielberg directed and produced countless movies. And he touched the lives of millions
of people through his films. His life goal is to continue feeling
totally happy by directing
and producing films. ¡°The only time I¡¯m totally happy is when I¡¯m
watching films or making them,¡± says Steven.
He is still passionate about his work.
He is a very busy person. But he always takes time for people and
for laughter! Also, he is very
generous with his money in
helping less fortunate people. As of 2006, the magazine Premiere listed
him as the most powerful and influential person in the
film industry. Also, Time
listed him as one of the 100 Greatest People of the Century. |
