There
are several reasons why people are fond of dolphins. They are not
only smart compared to other animals, but also show a playful attitude
to human. Here is another good news for dolphin-lovers. A new species
of river dolphin was recently discovered in Amazon, Brazil.
It has been almost 100 years since the last river dolphin species
was found in 1918. It became the fifth species of river dolphin. The
scientists named the new breed ¡°Araguaia¡± after the river where they
were found.
Araguaia looks different from other sea dolphins. They have long beaks!
Thanks to the beaks, the dolphins can hunt for fish at the bottom
of the river. Scientists believe that they evolved from other river
dolphin species more than two million years ago.
¡°It was something that was much unexpected, it is an area where people
see them all the time. They are large mammals. The thing is nobody
really looked. It is very exciting,¡± said Dr. Tomas Hrbek from the
Federal University of Amazonas.
However, they face the threat of extinction as soon as they were spotted.
Unfortunately, it is predicted that only about 1,000 river dolphins
are left in the world. Three of the four species are already critically
endangered. |
