Palm-Powered Flashlight    [26-07-2013]

A 15-year-old girl has invented a unique flashlight. Don¡¯t be surprised! It is powered only by the heat of your hand! Can¡¯t believe what I'm saying? Last year Ann Makosinski in Canada created a flashlight that uses kinetic energy to power its LED lights!

Makosinski already managed to secure a place in the finals of the 2013 Google Science Fair. One day, Ann was interested in harvesting surplus energy, energy that surrounds us but that we never really use.

The electrical power to light the bulb in the flashlight is generated because the heat from a human hand is hotter than the air around it. The light is strong enough to find small objects or read handwriting in the dark. Everyone who has a normal body temperature can use it for about an hour and a half.

The purpose of the invention is to be eco-friendly and contribute to protect the environment by making it unnecessary to have a battery inside the flashlight.

The fair¡¯s final winner will be announced on Sept. 23. If she becomes the grand prize winner, she will receive tickets to fly to the Galapagos Islands, as well as a $10,000 scholarship. Good luck, girl!
