Read & Feel    [07-03-2014]

Do you like reading books? Maybe you will if you have this one! Three students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) recently invented a device called ¡°Sensory Fiction.¡± It is a ¡°wearable book¡± which allows you to feel the emotions of the characters in the book.

¡°Traditionally, fiction creates and induces emotions and empathy through words and images,¡± one of the developers said. ¡°The wearable [technology] allows the reader to experience the protagonist¡¯s physiological emotions,¡± he added.

The Sensory Fiction consists of two components: a book and a vest. The book senses which page a reader is reading. The vest receives various signals from the book through networked sensors and actuators. At the same time, it creates certain effects to make the reader experience what a protagonist is feeling.

For example, if the protagonist is falling in love in the book, the vest makes your heart palpitates or beat fast by vibrating. When the protagonist feels scared, it makes you feel chilly by lowering your body temperature.

Color LED lights and speakers are embedded in the book. They also change depending on the protagonist¡¯s mood. When he or she feels sad, 150 LED lamps emit pink light and soft background music is played.

Many people expect that the Sensory Fiction might be the future of reading.
