All hail the future king! On July 22, Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge, gave birth to a healthy baby boy. Prince George Alexander Louis was born at St. Mary¡¯s Hospital in London at 4:24 local time. His official title is His Royal Highness Prince George of Cambridge. He is the third in line to the British throne, after his grandfather, Prince Charles, and his father, Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge.

On July 23, the world got its first glimpse at Prince George, who emerged from the hospital with his parents. The royal couple, both 31 years old, looked happy and relaxed as they waved to the thousands of journalists and well-wishers who had gathered outside St. Mary¡¯s. Prince William joked with the reporters, saying that his son has ¡°a good pair of lungs on him.¡± Catherine added that, ¡°It¡¯s such a special time. I think any parents will know what this feeling feels like.¡±

In London, gun salutes were fired and the bells rang at Westminster Abbey, the church where Prince William and Catherine were married. The fountain at Trafalgar Square, the London Eye, and the Tower Bridge lit up in blue. Around the world, people also paid tribute to the new royal heir. In New Zealand, 40 buildings across the islands lit up in blue to celebrate the royal birth. A similar lighting ceremony took place in Canada and Niagara Falls. In Australia, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd announced that a section of Sydney¡¯s Taronga Park Zoo would be named in honor of the baby prince.

The royal family has also publicly spoken about the latest addition to the family. Queen Elizabeth reportedly spent 30 minutes with her great-grandchild and said she was ¡°thrilled.¡± Prince Charles called the baby ¡°marvelous¡± and Prince Harry, the brother of Prince William, joked, ¡°I only hope my brother knows how expensive my babysitting charges are.¡± He also said he will ¡°make sure [that Prince George] has a good upbringing, keep him out of harm¡¯s way, and to make sure he has fun. The rest I¡¯ll leave to the parents.¡±

Welcome to the world, Prince George!
