Last week, after temperatures hovered around 35 degrees Celsius, the government issued heat alerts throughout much of the country. On August 8, the government also warned of power shortages, as people are expected to stay cool under the cool breeze of fans and air conditioners.

But can you stay cool this summer without using electricity? Yes! Just eat these special foods! Studies have found that certain foods, such as fruits and vegetables, can cool the body down. So let¡¯s take a look at what you can eat when you¡¯re feeling hot!

Watermelon
Watermelon contains 92 percent water. When you¡¯re feeling really thirsty, don¡¯t drink water; eat some watermelon. Studies have found that this delicious fruit is twice as hydrating as a glass of water.

Cucumbers
Watermelons are the most hydrating of fruits. Cucumbers are the most hydrating of vegetables. They contain 96 percent water. They¡¯re also rich in vitamins C and K.

Tomatoes
Tomatoes are low in calories and full of water (about 94 percent). They¡¯re also a healthy snack!

Spicy Foods
When it¡¯s sweltering outside, the last thing you want to do is eat something that is hot. However, although spicy foods may warm you up, they also cool you down after you finish your meal. According to Barry Swanson of Washington State University, ¡°Eating spicy foods results in a surge of blood to the skin,¡± he said. ¡°This increase in blood flow may result in increased temperature, but as the flow decreases, you may feel cooler.¡±

Coconut Water
Not only is coconut water tasty, it acts similar to a sports drink. It re-hydrates the body and is fat-free, cholesterol-free, and rich in potassium.

So when the temperatures are rising and you are feeling hot, try eating these foods and see if you feel any cooler!
