Food
poisoning is a lot more common in the summer when
the weather is hot and muggy. This is because bacteria grow quickly
when the temperatures reach 32 degrees Celsius. Bacteria can form when food sits out in
the heat or at room temperature. If eaten,
these bad bacteria can make you very sick.
Meat, raw foods, and unwashed vegetables
all have germs that can cause food poisoning. This is why it¡¯s important
to properly prepare, cook, and
put away foods. If you don¡¯t,
you could have an upset stomach, stomach cramps, diarrhea, or a fever. Although
some people feel sick almost immediately after they eat
the bad food, other times, they may not feel sick until several days
later. The good news is that most people who get food poisoning feel
better after a few hours.
So
how can you avoid food poisoning? The best way is to wash your hands
with soap and warm water. If you like to help your mom in the kitchen,
wash your hands before you start helping and after you¡¯re done. It¡¯s
also a good idea to wash all fruits and vegetables before you eat
them.
Another tip is that before you eat or drink something, smell it. If
something looks or smells weird, ask an adult before
you eat or drink it. Always check the date as well. Most, if not all,
packaged foods have expiration dates.
Don¡¯t
eat food if the expiration date has passed. Also, if you like eating
leftovers, heat up your food before you eat it. Heat will kill the
bacteria. When you¡¯re done eating, immediately put the food in the
refrigerator. Remember, bacteria
grow quickly when it¡¯s hot. So, by putting food in the fridge, you
can stop bad germs from forming.
Follow these tips, and stay healthy this summer! |
