Mother Teresa was a nun and a strong, independent woman. She spent her whole life helping the poorest of the poor in India. Her selfless love touched the hearts of millions of people all over the world. In 1979, she was honored with Nobel Peace Prize for her noble work.

Mother Teresa was born on August 27, 1910 in Yugoslavia. At the age of 12, she felt the call of God strongly. And she decided to spread the love of Christ. At the age of 18, she left her home and joined a community of nuns in Ireland. In 1931, she was sent to India. From 1931 to 1948, Mother Teresa taught history and geography at St. Mary¡¯s High School in Calcutta.

While she was teaching in Calcutta, the poverty in the city had a deep impact on her mind. So she decided to help the poor instead of teaching students at school. She started an open-air school for poor children. Also, she took care of homeless people.

Mother Teresa started the Missionaries of Charity»ç¶ûÀÇ ¼±±³ ¼ö³àȸ in October, 1950. The main task of the group was to take care of homeless people. Soon, many people all over the world were moved by Mother Teresa¡¯s noble spirit. Many people started supporting her by sending clothes, money and food.

The Missionaries of Charity has spread all over the world. It also has a branch in Korea. The group actively helps the poor in many countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. They also take care of the sick including alcoholics and AIDS patients all around the world.

Mother Teresa¡¯s work has been recognized and praised throughout the world. And she received a number of awards. In 1979, Mother Teresa received Nobel Peace Prize for her selfless devotion.

Until her death, Mother Teresa continued her work among the poorest of the poor. Even though she was old and weak, she never stopped her work. Countless people received her merciful care for more than 50 years! Finally, on September 5, 1997, after finishing her dinner and prayers, Mother Teresa went back to God, who was the center of her life.
