Hitachi,
a Japanese engineering and electronics company, recently developed
a brand new humanoid robot: EMIEW 2. A humanoid robot resembles
a human body. It has a head, two arms, and two legs just like humans
do.
EMIEW stands for Excellent Mobility and Interactive Existence as
Workmate. It is an upgraded version of EMIEW 1, which was released
in 2005. EMIEW 2 is 80 cm high, weighing 14 kg. As its name shows,
it can move at 6 km per hour using its roller skate-like feet.
Another key feature of the robot is that it has an ability to recognize
human voices. When someone asks the robot something, for example,
it can understand the meaning of the question by analyzing key words
and then answer it.
Also,
EMIEW 2 can understand human body language, such as nodding heads.
When its interlocutor tilts his or her head during the conversation,
it explains it again to make sure. Since the robot understands what
people talk about, it can even make a joke.
Will robots ever be human? We can only imagine, at least for now.
