September 9 was a historic day. A giraffe named Jang-soon in the Lost Valley at Everland Zoo gave birth to her 18th calf. According to International Species Information System (ISIS)±¹Á¦ Á¾ Á¤º¸ ½Ã½ºÅÛ, she set the world record for the number of births for the species. Amazingly, the day was her 27th birthday, too.

In fact, Jang-soon tied the record with Lamba from the Paris Zoo who was born in 1982. Sadly, the French giraffe died in 2005.

Why was Jang-soon able to have many babies despite her old age? There are a couple of reasons. First, there was an animal-friendly zoo environment. Second, she enjoyed the professional care of the keepers. Finally, the third reason was because she lived with her mate, Jang-dari, in conjugal harmony. Jang-soon and Jang-dari, both born in 1986, have lived together as a couple in the zoo for 24 years.

It is said that Jang-soon is very healthy now. ¡°As an animal keeper, I¡¯ve been happy and lucky to be with a healthy giraffe like Jang-soon for so long,¡± said a senior animal keeper at Everland, who has spent 26 years with the giraffe.
