Are
you excited about winter? This season is a fun time of the year. You
can have snowball fights and build snowmen with your friends, go skiing
or tubing with your family, and celebrate Christmas and New Year¡¯s!
Although winter is still a month away-the first day of winter is December
21 this year-it¡¯s never too early to learn how to stay safe during
this season!
Layer Up!
The weather is already getting colder. The best way to protect yourself
from the cold is by dressing in layers. For your upper body, start
by putting on a long-sleeved thermal undershirt. Then, put on another
long-sleeved shirt, one or two shirts, a sweater, and a coat or jacket.
Try to wear clothes that are not made of cotton because cotton doesn¡¯t
keep you very warm. For your lower body, put on thermal underwear
and a pair of heavy pants. Avoid jeans and khakis, because these clothes
don¡¯t keep you warm. They will even make your legs and butt colder
if you get wet. Waterproof pants are ideal. For your feet, wear heavy
socks and waterproof shoes.
Grab a Hat and Other Accessories
Since body heat escapes through the head, you¡¯ll feel much warmer
if you wear a hat. Don¡¯t forget scarves, facemasks, and earmuffs if
it¡¯s really windy and chilly outside. Your fingers are also sensitive
to the cold, so you should put on mittens or gloves. Your hands and
fingers will thank you when you¡¯re playing around in the snow.
Drink
a Lot of Fluids
When you¡¯re outside in the cold and breathing heavily, you lose a
lot of your body¡¯s water through your breath. The best way to get
that water back into your body is by drinking up. Warm drinks, such
as hot chocolate, tea, and soups, will keep you hydrated and keep
you warm when it¡¯s cold outside.
Listen to Your Body
Oftentimes, when you¡¯re having fun, it¡¯s easy to forget to take care
of your body. If you start shivering or your teeth are chattering,
your body is telling you that you have to go inside. The same is true
if you feel dizzy or weak. Always be alert to your body¡¯s signals
and try to take frequent breaks. You can warm up and give your body
a rest, and then go back outside for more fun. |
