We
all have to sleep every night. But what is happening in our brains when we are sleeping?
Have you ever woken up and remembered strange events and images that occurred during the night?
The events and images that you remember are often about good and happy
things. But sometimes they are about bad things and can even be very
scary. But don't worry. You
are experiencing what most people in the world are experiencing!
These strange things that we sometimes remember are called dreams.
We dream every time we sleep deeply. Our most vivid dreams occur during
a kind of sleep called "REM." REM stands for
"rapid eye movement" because our eyes move back and forth quickly. The
brain is very active during REM sleep.
During the night, REM sleep occurs about once every 100 minutes. And
it lasts about 15-45 minutes.
We generally have this REM sleep
about 3-4 times a night.
Some people believe dreams all have a deep meaning. And some people
even believe dreams can predict the future. But studies
have never proven that to be true. This
is because it is difficult to study dreams in a laboratory!
We dream about many different things. When you go to sleep, your brain
begins to take pieces of memories and put
them together into a dream. Most dreams do not make a lot of sense.
This is because your brain just took little pieces from a bunch of different memories.
Most people dream in color. But some people have dreams in black and white or shades of brown.
Your dreams
can be funny, scary, strange, or exciting. Just try to enjoy them.
They allow you to go to different places and to see amazing things
that you don't get to see in your everyday life!
There is a way to help yourself have good dreams. While falling asleep, you
can start thinking about a happy moment. Then, your dream will begin
from the happy thoughts. For example, think about riding a horse on
a mountain. Picture yourself on the horse's
back and then the horse begins to fly! That will bring a good dream.
Happy thoughts bring happy dreams! |
