Six
cities have launched their bids to host the 2022 Winter Olympics.
They are Almaty, Kazakhstan; Beijing, China; Krakow, Poland; Lviv,
Ukraine; Oslo, Norway; and Stockholm, Sweden. The cities will have
two years to campaign before a host city is chosen in July 2015 in
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) released a statement saying
that the field ¡°includes a strong mix of both traditional and developing
winter sports markets.¡± Five of the six countries have previously
bid for the Winter Olympics before-Ukraine is only newcomer. If chosen,
Stockholm or Beijing would be the first city to host both the Summer
and Winter Olympics.
¡°These
cities and their supporters clearly understand the benefits that hosting
the games can have and the long-lasting legacy that a game can bring
to the region,¡± added Thomas Bach, president of the IOC.
The 2022 race has twice as many candidates as the 2018 games, when
Pyeongchang defeated Munich, Germany and Annecy, France to become
the host of the 2018 Winter Olympics. What¡¯s next up for the six cities?
They will participate in a seminar in Switzerland, from December 4
to 6, on how to observe the program for February¡¯s 2014 Winter Games
in Sochi, Russia. |
