The
Richards family sure knows how to celebrate Christmas! David and Janean
Richards of Forrest, Australia, used 502,165 LED lights to decorate
their house and yard. They set a new Guinness World Record for the
most lights on a residential property. If the lights were laid out
from end to end, they would stretch for more than 50 km!
According to Mr. Richards, the lights took about three weeks to install.
He said he received help from his three children, volunteers, and
friends. ¡°I started in October,¡± he said. ¡°I only took one weekend
off since I began decorating.¡± Mr. Richards added that keeping all
those lights on is very expensive. He said his electricity bill comes
out to $2,300 a month. However, a local renewable energy company is
paying for the bill.
Mr. and
Mrs. Richards said the real purpose of the lights is to raise money
for the SIDS and Kids ACT, a charity that works to reduce sudden and
unexpected death in children. ¡°The charity is very close to our hearts,¡±
said Mr. Richards. ¡°We lost a child, and SIDS looked after us many
years ago.¡±
The Richards family broke the Guinness record set by the Gay family
of Lagrangeville, New York. Last year, they decorated their house
with almost 350,000 lights. ¡°Congratulations to the Australian family!¡±
the Gays recently posted on their Facebook page. ¡°I commend them on
their fundraising as well. No, we won¡¯t be trying for it again next
year :).¡± |
