If
you want a truly unique experience, book a reservation at Sweden¡¯s
ICEHOTEL. Located in Jukkasjarvi, a tiny village in northern Sweden,
the hotel is rebuilt every year from scratch. This is because it is
carved from ice blocks, which of course, melt away every summer.
The ICEHOTEL first opened in 1990 and is currently celebrating its
24th year. This year, the hotel was constructed with 1,000 tons of
ice and 30,000 tons of ¡°snice¡±?a mixture of ice and snow. It covers
5,500 square meters, and there is a total of 65 rooms. The most luxurious
room this year is called Mini Evolutions and includes a sauna, a relaxation
area, and a bathroom. For those on a more frugal budget, there are
Ice and Snow rooms that are equipped with just a bed and a few pieces
of furniture, which are all made out of ice.
The temperature
inside the hotel stays at -5¡ÆC. It is recommended that guests sleep
in thermal sleeping bags and keep their clothes, including their gloves,
hats, and scarves, on all night. Perhaps this is why most guests prefer
stay just one night in the ICEHOTEL before moving to warmer cabins
nearby. There are a number of activities to keep you busy during the
day: snowshoeing, dog sledding, snowmobile safaris, and overnight
wilderness camping. You can also take trips to see the aurora borealis,
the Northern Lights.
Due to the success of the ICEHOTEL, many similar hotels have emerged
in countries like Canada, Norway, and Finland. However, the ICEHOTEL
remains the first, the biggest, and the grandest of all. |
