I
bet many children don't like studying. But learning is very important. And it can be
very fun, too! In fact, a lot of people
in the world never stop learning. This is because they know learning
something new is important. This week, I'd like to introduce you to an amazing
man living in Wisconsin in the U.S. Say hello to Clarence Garrett!
Two weeks ago, he was awarded his bachelor's degree at the
University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He started studying at the university
in spring of 2006. So, what's so special about him? Don't
be surprised. He is 87 years old! At the graduation ceremony, he earned
a standing ovation when awarded his degree.
Garrett served as a civilian at a U.S. Navy facility in Virginia before
World War II. Once the war began, he served with the Army in Europe.
He later settled in Milwaukee. He
took courses at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. But he had
to give up college to raise a family. "After all my children went
to college, I said, 'Why shouldn't I?'" Garrett said. "And
I have loved it ever since!" |
