It
is spring and many people walk with their dogs on streets, in parks,
and along rivers. If you are one of them, you may want to pay more
attention and watch where you are going. A couple, John and Mary,
who live in California, U.S.A., found a buried fortune while walking
their dog! What they actually discovered was the most valuable gold
in North America!
The couple were strolling around on their property, in Northern
California¡¯s Gold County, with their dog. It had been their routine
for years. However, sometime in 2013, John found a rusted can in
the ground, and the couple took a closer look. The can was not dented
at all, so they decided to take it home. Because it was extremely
heavy, they thought that it would be filled with lead paint. When
John opened it, he saw the side of a shiny gold coin! The couple
immediately returned and dug up the area. They also found one more
can, which was broken, and valuable coins in the ground below. They
unearthed six more cans in the vicinity over the next few days.
Their unexpected
find is called the ¡°Saddle Ridge Hoard,¡± and comprises of fourteen
hundred $20 gold coins, fifty $10 gold coins, and four $5 gold coins,
which were struck between 1847 and 1894. Experts believed that the
metal cans that contained the gold coins were buried sometime in
the late 19th century, right after the peak of California¡¯s Gold
Rush. Some experts estimate that the coins will be worth about $10
million.
Next time, wherever you walk, be more attentive to your surroundings.
Who knows? You may find a valuable item. Put your smart phone in
your pocket or bag, and walk carefully! |
