More Healthful Schools    [02-05-2014]

It is often stated how unhealthful the food in America is. Many foods in America are high in sodium, sugar, and fat. And the serving portions, too, are greater than many other countries.

For a long time, schools have been offering unhealthful food to their students as well. Pizza, hamburgers, French fries, and chicken strips were some of the foods that could be commonly seen in many school cafeterias at lunchtime.

Recently, however, there has been a nationwide strive for healthful lifestyles, promoting healthful food and exercise. Schools are offering more healthful meal choices with more fruits and vegetables on students¡¯ lunch trays. Sodas and juices are banned from most schools and are replaced with water and milk. Finally, vending machines that were formally stocked with chips, cookies, sweet pastries, and candy bars are restocked with snack options that are more healthful and will keep students fuller and more focused in class because they offer low sugar, low calorie options. Protein bars, baked chips, and cheese are some examples of these snacks. School administrators know that lessons cannot be learned on an empty stomach, so they want to offer healthful food to students so they can do their best in school.
