Father¡¯s Day    [13-06-2014]

A couple of weeks ago, I introduced Mother¡¯s Day to our readers. This time, I would like to introduce another day that was created to complement Mother¡¯s Day: Father¡¯s Day.
While Mother¡¯s Day is celebrated the second Sunday of May, Father¡¯s Day is the third Sunday of June. The day celebrates the importance fathers and father figures have in their children¡¯s lives.

Father¡¯s Day was founded in the state of Washington, in 1910. A local girl, Sonora Smart, and her five siblings were raised by their father because their mother passed away while giving birth to her youngest son. During a church sermon about the newly founded Mother¡¯s Day, Sonora wondered why Father¡¯s Day did not exist.
She knew how hard her father worked to raise his children by himself, so she asked the church to honor fathers as well. Sonora suggested that they celebrate the day on her father¡¯s birthday, June 5, but the church decided to celebrate it on the third Sunday instead. Through the years, it was celebrated throughout the country and finally became a national day of observance under President Richard Nixon, in 1972.

Similar to Mother¡¯s Day, Father¡¯s Day is celebrated with close family members. Greeting cards with sentimental texts are sold everywhere, and many discounts on menswear and traditionally masculine gifts are easily found. Schools also promote this holiday by having students make personalized gifts during art class. Families show their appreciation for fathers who love being in the spotlight for the day!
