National Adopt-a-Cat Month    [27-06-2014]

How many of you own a pet? As you probably know, Americans love animals and many Americans own animals as pets. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, dogs are the most popular pets in America. Cats are a close second; in 2013, there were well over 30 million households that owned cats as pets. So the fact that an entire month is dedicated to rescuing cats is not surprising! June is National Adopt-a-Cat month. This means that the whole month of June is all about promoting cat adoption.

Each spring, thousands of new kittens are born. Many newborn kittens end up in shelters, which are organizations that take care of animals that are homeless. Shelters have all animals of all ages that are without homes. Because new kittens are born in the springtime, shelters are often full of cats during June. The sheltered cats are not just kittens; they are all ages from newborn kittens to older cats.

Through National Adopt-a-Cat month, shelters and rescuers want people to know that many cats need loving homes, especially during June. The goal is to have people adopt a homeless cat instead of buying one from a pet store. Shelters and rescue groups set up events where they take cats to public parks for easier adoption. Incentives, like reduced adoption fees for older cats, are also given. If you are thinking about getting a pet, consider adopting a cat! Instead of buying one, try doing research to see whether any cats in your area need a loving home. You will not regret having this wonderful animal as your companion.
