There are many different clams in the world. Most of them are very small. But if you visit the Philippines, you can see the biggest clam in the world. The world's biggest clam is called the giant clam or taklobo.
So, how big is the giant clam? Don't be surprised. A taklobo can measure up to 1.4 meters in length. And it can weigh as much as 260 kilograms! The Filipinos of olden days even used the shell as a wash basin! There is one more surprising thing about these wonderful creatures. They can live for more than 100 years!
Sadly, however, giant clams are endangered today. They used to thrive in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. But most of them died out due to pollution. Also, people caught so many of them for food. In order to save the amazing clams, the Filipinos and the World Wide Fund for Nature¼¼°èÀÚ¿¬º¸È£±â±Ý are trying very hard. The giant clams recently found a new home in a "clam garden" built 80 meters off the shore of Pico de Loro Cove in Hamilo Coast in Batangas.
