Ban
Ki-moon is the 8th Secretary-General of the
United Nations. At the time of his election as Secretary-General,
Mr. Ban was Korea¡¯s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade. He has
a reputation as a wise leader. Recently, he was praised
as the most trusted leader in the world.
Ban Ki-moon was born on June 13, 1944 in Eumseong. When he was 18
years old, Mr. Ban won a competition that took him
to the White House to meet U.S.
President John F. Kennedy. The experience inspired his public career.
Mr. Ban graduated from Seoul National University in 1970. He joined
the Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade¿Ü±³Åë»óºÎ the same year.
He earned a master¡¯s degree from the Kennedy School of Government
at Harvard University in 1985.
For over 25 years, Mr. Ban served in a variety of diplomatic posts inside and outside of Korea. He was
also actively involved in issues relating to inter-Korean relations. In
2005, he played a leading role as a Foreign Minister to promote peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula.
In 2001,
he began work at the United Nations as the chief of staff to Han Seung-soo,
the president of the General Assembly. He returned to Korea and was
Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade from 2004 until 2006. On October
13, 2006, Mr. Ban was named UN Secretary-General elect.
In 2007, he became the 8th Secretary-General of the United Nations.
He is the second Asian to hold the post of Secretary-General.
U Thant of Burma (now Myanmar) was the first. He served from 1961-71.
Many people all over the world say Mr.
Ban is a quiet but powerful leader who is able
to work effectively with everyone.
He received countless prizes, medals and honors from all over the
world. Now he is working hard to make the world a better, more peaceful place. |
