Parrots can learn how to
speak. And some of them can sound just like humans! In fact, there's a parrot
that can speak just like a person in the U.S.
His name is Merlin and he is a blue-and-gold macaw.
Macaws are very smart birds. They are known for their ability to reproduce human speech. Last
week, the 7-year-old macaw scared off a burglar at a pet store in
Massachusetts!
Last Thursday when the burglar smashed the front window of the pet store,
Merlin began to shout.
"When he hears someone coming into the building, he'll start
calling for Rhonda.
Rhonda is a woman who used to own him," the store
manager Lori Oltman said. "When the burglar entered my shop,
Merlin was screaming for Rhonda. The
burglar wasn't aware that it was a bird and not a person. So he took
flight rather quickly."
According to Oltman, it was
not the first time the bird's voice confused people. "He
sounds just like a person when he talks. You really can't tell that
it's a bird.
So a lot of times people are fooled by that," she said. |
