year, Paul Potts surprised the whole world
with his fantastic voice. He is a British tenor who became the winner of the famous TV show Britain’s
Got Talent last year. He was not a professional singer. He was
a cell phone salesman. But he loved singing
more than anything. And he showed the world that if you believe in
your dreams, dreams come true!
Paul Potts was born on October 13, 1970 in Bristol, England. Paul
started singing almost from the moment he could talk! He was a talented singer. When he
was 11 years old, he was the member of one of the best church choirs in Bristol.
But his love of opera started when he turned 16. One day, he bought
a recording of Jose Carreras,
the famous Spanish tenor. Paul was moved by his songs and fell in
love with opera.
Singing made him very happy and he wanted to become a tenor when he
grew up. But there was a problem. He was suffering from low self-esteem. In fact, Paul has spent most
of his life feeling “unimportant.” Whenever he
felt sad or lonely, he sang a song. Singing
made him happy. His only true friend was his voice.
Even though Paul loved singing the most, he became a cell phone salesman.
This was because he lacked self-confidence. But he wasn’t
happy with his job. “When I was selling cell phones, I always felt
like I was putting on an act. But when I sang, that’s when I felt
I was myself - the real me,” Paul said.
In June, 2007, Paul took up courage and decided to apply for Britain’s Got Talent,
a famous TV show that searches for Britain’s next best talented actors, singers and dancers.
When he appeared on stage and said he was going
to sing opera, the judges and viewers laughed at him. He
was wearing a cheap suit and he looked scared. But when he opened
his mouth and started singing, everyone was very surprised. He had
such a powerful and beautiful voice!
Some people were even moved to tears! Result? He became the winner
of the show!
 After the
show, Paul became very famous. He even released his first album
One Chance on July 16, 2007. Many people loved his voice very much
and his album reached number 1 on various music charts in England.
His album was very popular in other countries, too. In fact, the album hit the
number 1 spot in 13 countries around the world!
So, did his successful debut help him regain self-confidence? “It
has changed my whole life. I used to feel so small and
unimportant. But now I know I am someone. I am an opera singer and
this is what I do! It has done so much for my confidence and I really can’t
thank people enough for giving me the chance to realize my dream,” he said
with a big smile. Now as a tenor, Paul Potts is giving concerts all
around the world. |
