Ernest Hemingway was the most influential American writer of the last century. He left many timeless masterpieces such as For Whom the Bell Tolls, A Farewell to Arms, The Sun Also Rises and The Old Man and the Sea. He won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954. During his tumultuous life, he was married four times and he ended his own life.
Ernest Hemingway was born on July 21, 1899 in Illinois. His father taught him outdoor life, how to use an axe, a gun, and to be afraid of nothing. His mother, on the other hand, taught him culture and took him to operas, concerts and art galleries.

Ernest and his five brothers and sisters were brought up in an intensely religious atmosphere. Hemingway was a passionate person. He tried his best to be excellent at everything he did.
He started his career as a writer in a newspaper office in Kansas City at the age of 17. After the U.S. entered the First World War, he joined a volunteer ambulance unit in the Italian army. Serving at the front, he was wounded and spent considerable time in hospitals. After his return to the United States, he became a reporter for Canadian and American newspapers and was soon sent back to Europe to cover such events as the Greek Revolution.
In his twenties, he and his first wife Elizabeth Hadley Richardson were traveling the world. While traveling, Hemingway occasionally submitted articles to The Toronto Sun. He also wrote his first novel.

After seeing the bullfights in Spain, he wrote The Sun Also Rises and The Torrents of Spring. These two novels gained huge popularity, and Hemingway decided to dedicate himself fully to writing novels.
Unfortunately, Hemingway¡¯s personal life was tumultuous. He was slowly losing his eye sight. Also, he had a series of car accidents which left his health in a devastating condition. And he had many failed marriages behind him. However, Hemingway wrote his best novels in times of crisis.

He wrote the acclaimed For Whom the Bell Tolls and The Old Man and the Sea during times when he was going through divorces and his health was at its worst. Toward the end of his life, he started losing his eye sight and memory rapidly. On July 2, 1961, the great writer ended his own life. However, the works he left behind are cherished widely today.
