meaning berry. Pepper is native to India. It was an
important seasoning in Indian food.
Pepper reached Southeast Asia about
2,000 years ago. Since then, it has been grown
in the lands of Malaysia, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, China and
Indonesia.
Pepper has a long history. People started using it since 1000 BC!
They used it to make foods taste better. Also, pepper
was used as a medicine in many countries.
It has been used in the East to treat digestive problems and fever for over 4,000 years.
In China, people used pepper to treat malaria and cholera. In India, it was
used for a number of health problems. Pepper was much used by the
Romans, too.
Long ago,
pepper was considered very valuable. Surprisingly, it was often
used as money! In England, people paid rent with pepper. Can you
believe it? People in France cherished pepper, too. So,
there was a French saying, "As dear as pepper" in the
Middle Ages. By the Middle
Ages, pepper was of great importance in Europe. People used it to
season or preserve meats.
So, is pepper good for you? Doctors say it may have a number of health
benefits. It helps digest food easily. Also, pepper has
a great anti-bacterial effect. When
