What is the largest living bird?
¡æ The ostrich is the largest living bird. It can grow up to 2.7 meters tall and weighs between 70 to 135 kilograms. The ostrich can run at speeds of up to 45 mph. They have excellent eyesight and powerful legs.

Why do a cat¡¯s eyes glow in the dark?
¡æ The cat¡¯s eyes are adapted for seeing in the dark. During the day, the pupils contract. But at night they open wide letting in every bit of light possible. The backs of their eyes are coated with polished silvery pigments called ¡°Eumelanin¡± and ¡°Phaeomelanin.¡± They reflect every bit of light that falls on the eye. That is why cat¡¯s eyes glow in the dark.

Do fish sleep?
¡æ Most fish do not sleep because they do not have eyelids. But they do rest when the light dims. They rest against rocks, bracing themselves with their fins. Many fish are active during the night. And they rest during the day.

Can snakes hear?
¡æ Snakes have no ears. So they cannot hear sounds. But they can feel vibrations on the ground. So when someone approaches them, they can feel it due to the vibrations of the feet on the ground.

How did the hippopotamus get its name?
¡æ The word ¡°hippopotamus¡± means ¡°river horse.¡± The animal got this name because it spends much of its time in the water and its wide nostrils and ears look like that of a horse.

What is the origin of the dog?
¡æ All living members of the dog family are descendants of a wolf-like creature called ¡°Tomarctus¡±. This ancient canine, called ¡°the father of the dogs¡±, roamed the forests about 15 million years ago.

Do all peacocks have feathers?

¡æ Only male peacocks have feathers. The females don¡¯t have these beautiful feathers. Peacocks display their feathers and dance to attract peahens.

How do parrots talk?
¡æ Parrots do not talk -- they only imitate sounds that human beings make. They cannot express themselves. They just enjoy imitating sounds. In fact, parrots do not learn human speech easily. The words must be repeated slowly and clearly, many times over. Once it learns a word or phrase, it will be able to imitate the sounds.
