There are many great writers in the world. Today I want to introduce you to a writer who is respected the world over. He is considered one of the greatest writers of the 20th century. He even won a Nobel Prize for literature in 1983. His name is William Golding.
Golding was born on September 19, 1911 in St. Columb Minor in Cornwall, England. During his teenage years, Golding was very interested in science. So, he went to a college in Oxford to study science. However, after he left college, he wanted to study literature and write stories.
This was because Golding always loved to read and watch plays. He knew as he got older that he had a strong wish to become a writer. First, he wrote a series of poems when he worked as a school teacher. He started writing short stories and novels when he joined the navy during World War II. It was during his time in the army that he started to think deeply about life and relationships between people.

In 1954, Golding¡¯s first book came out. It was called Lord of the Flies. It was about kids living on a deserted island where there were no adults. The book was very popular when it came out. People loved the story and the book became a bestseller. Golding wrote more books. He was so successful that he finally quit his job as a teacher. At the age of 50, he became a full time writer.

Believe it or not, many schools in the U.S. make their students read this novel! The story of good and evil in people, even in kids, interested many people. Today, universities and scholars think of this book as a classic masterpiece! After his success, Golding wrote many more books. Although they were good, people loved the first book more. The funny thing is, more and more people bought his first book!

As Golding got older, he wrote many more wonderful plays and novels that became classics. In 1983, Golding won the Nobel Prize for literature, and in 1988, the Queen of England knighted him! I guess you could imagine how successful he was. Well, no matter how much success he had, he was always humble. This was another reason why he was respected and loved by many people. At the age of 81, Golding died peacefully in his home. He left us so many wonderful stories to read and enjoy.
