 Warren
Buffett is a world-famous American investor and businessman. He is regarded
as one of the world’s most successful investors. He
is also the largest shareholder and CEO of Berkshire
Hathaway, a diversified company in Nebraska.
Buffett was ranked by Forbes magazine as the second richest American
as of September 17, 2008. But he is not just an ordinary rich businessman.
He is doing a lot of charitable work, too. That’s
why many people in the world look up to him!
Warren Buffet was born on August 30, 1930 in Omaha, Nebraska. He was
the second of three children. Buffet showed an amazing talent for both money and
business at a very early age. As a boy, he delivered newspapers to make
extra money. And young Buffet
was very good at calculating.
At only 6 years old, while other kids his age were playing in the
playground, Warren was making
money. For example, one day, he
bought 6-packs of Coca Cola from his
grandfather’s grocery store for 25 cents.
Then, the little boy resold each of the bottles for 5 cents, pocketing a 5 cent profit!
In 1947, Warren graduated from high school. He didn’t want to go to
college. However, his father
urged him to attend the Wharton Business
School at the University of Pennsylvania. Warren stayed there for
2 years, but it was very boring for him. Why? He complained that he knew more
than his professors!
 In 1948,
Warren returned home to Omaha and
transferred to the University
of Nebraska. He graduated from the school in only 3 years, while working
full-time. After graduating from the University of Nebraska, he studied
business at Columbia Graduate Business School. There, he met the legendary investor Benjamin
Graham who changed Warren’s life forever.
Warren worked with Benjamin Graham at Graham’s firm and learned a lot about
stock investment from him.
When Graham retired, Buffett started
a limited partnership in Omaha.
The partnership was a great success! After several years, Warren decided
to close the partnership, and bought an interest in Berkshire Hathaway.
Soon, he made a fortune and became one of the richest men in the world.
Even though he has a lot of money, Warren Buffet is a humble man. He also likes
to help people in need. In 2006, he revealed a plan to give away his fortune to
charity. In 2007, Warren
Buffet was listed among Time’s “100 Most Influential People in the
World.” |
