1.
Chimpanzees: Chimpanzees are almost like us. Human
genomes are at least 98 percent identical to those of chimps.
Chimps are very smart. Like humans, they can make and use tools. They also know how
to hunt in organized groups. According to animal scientists,
chimpans can understand each others¡¯ feelings, too. Recently, they even performed better than humans
on a number memory test. Also, some chimps
have learned sign language and even taught it to each other! Furthermore, some chimps
have been able to perform some basic functions on specially-designed computer
programs, including solving certain
problems.
2. Dolphins: Dolphins are creative and smart. For example, they can use
available tools to protect themselves. They
are so smart that they know how to get rewarded with fish. They
can create new tricks to please their trainers
and get more fish in return! Also, dolphins
are capable of creating a mental image of communicating
with their fellows at great distances, using
echolocation and special clicking noises.
3.
Elephants: Elephants have big brains and they are capable
of self-awareness. They can
recognize themselves in the
mirror. Only highly intelligent animals such
as humans and great apes are able to do
this. Elephants communicate with one another
via vibrations sensed in their feet. Like
dolphins, elephants can communicate over great distances. And the
memory of these animals is amazing.
4. Dogs: Dogs are man¡¯s best friend. And they can
learn many things through training. For example, most pet dogs easily learn to sit, lie
down, roll over and fetch. According to American
researchers, dogs can also
read their owner¡¯s emotions. Some animal scientists
believe that dogs have the ability to understand someone
else¡¯s point of view. They can understand
the way a human feels by their facial expressions and tone
of voice.

5. Cats: Cats can be trained to perform complex tasks in numerous ways like dogs.
Many cat owners have trained their pet cats to sit down, jump through
hoops and roll over. Cats learn the tricks by observation and imitation. But training cats
is harder than dogs. Does that mean they are less smart? Well, not
necessarily. Cat experts say that cats are
just different. |
