Every year on May 8, we celebrate Parents¡¯ Day in Korea. Many countries around the world also celebrate Parents¡¯ Day. But usually they have Mother¡¯s Day and Father¡¯s Day separately. Also, not all countries celebrate the two days on the same day. This week, let¡¯s travel all around the world and learn some fun facts about Mother¡¯s Day! We¡¯ll learn about Father¡¯s Day next week.

On Mother¡¯s day, people all around the world say thank you to their mothers. On this day, they think about the love that their mothers give them. Children make cards or gifts for their mothers. In many countries, Mother¡¯s Day is the second Sunday in May.

The USA, Australia, Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey, and Belgium celebrate the day on the second Sunday in May. In Spain, Mother¡¯s Day is celebrated on December 8. In France, it is celebrated on the last Sunday of May. Argentina celebrates the day on the second Sunday in October. England celebrates Mother¡¯s Day on the fourth Sunday of Lent.

So, when did people start celebrating Mother¡¯s Day? Each country has a different history. In ancient Greece, there were days honoring mothers. In the 1600s in England, there was a special day called Mothering Sunday. On that day, the servants could go back home with a special cake and thank their mothers.
In the USA, a writer named Julia Ward Howe proposed a day for mothers in 1872. And in 1908, a school teacher named Anna M. Jarvis began a campaign for a national Mother¡¯s Day. In 1914, Anna¡¯s hard work finally paid off, and President Woodrow Wilson made the second Sunday of May Mother¡¯s Day.

In Korea, the first Mother¡¯s Day was celebrated in 1956. But it was renamed as Parents¡¯ Day in 1973 to honor both mothers and fathers. On this day, we buy carnations and gifts for our parents.
