 Emma
Watson is a British actress who gained huge popularity
after playing the role of Hermione Granger
in the Harry Potter film series. She starred in five Harry Potter
film installments from 2001 to
2007. She will return for the final two installments: Harry
Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, due to be released in 2009, and
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Emma’s performance in the Harry
Potter series has earned her several awards.
Emma Watson was born on April 15, 1990 in Paris, France. She lived
in Paris until the age of 5. Following her parents’ divorce, she moved to England
with her mother and younger brother. From the age of 6, Watson expressed a desire to become an actress.
She had starred in school plays, but she had never
acted professionally before the
Harry Potter series.
Emma made her professional film debut in 2001 at age 11 by playing
the role of Hermione Granger in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.
The film was a great success. Critics praised the acting of the
young actress, calling her performance “admirable.” Emma was nominated
for five awards for her performance in the movie, winning the Young Artist
Award for Leading Young Actress.
 A
year later, Emma again starred as Hermione in Harry Potter and the
Chamber of Secrets, the second installment of the series. She received
an Otto Award from a German magazine for her excellent performance. In
2004, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban was released, and Emma
did a great job again. She won two Otto Awards and the Child Performance
of the Year Award from one of the leading British magazines Total
Film.
When Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire was released in 2005, critics
praised the increasing maturity of Emma, and The
New York Times called her performance “touchingly earnest.” She won a bronze Otto Award for her
great acting in this film. Later that year, Emma became the youngest
actress to appear on the cover of Teen
Vogue at age 15. In 2006, she played Hermione in The Queen’s Handbag,
a special mini-episode of Harry
Potter in celebration of Queen Elizabeth
II’s 80th birthday.
 The fifth
film in the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Order of the
Phoenix was released in 2007 and Emma’s fame continued. She won the National
Movie Award for Best Female Performance. Other than Harry Potter movies,
she will star in the animated film The Tale of
Despereaux, which will be released in December, 2008. She will voice the character of Princess
Pea in the film.
Emma is a great actress, but she is not sure about her future as an
actress. She said in an interview that “I love to
perform, but there are so
many other things I love doing.” In fact, she said she is
considering moving to America
to study at university. “I’ve applied to a few universities for next
year, including several American ones. If I do go there, I will do
a liberal arts degree, but if I stay in
the U.K. I’ll do English literature.” |
