Walt
Disney is the creator of Mickey Mouse and
founder of Disneyland and
Walt Disney World. During his 43-year Hollywood career, Disney received
more than 950 honors and citations from many countries
in the world, including 48 Academy Awards and 7 Emmys in his
lifetime. Walt Disney¡¯s awards
included honorary degrees from Harvard,
Yale, the University of Southern California and UCLA. He also won
the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He is still praised by many as
the most important figure in graphic arts.
Walt Disney was born on December 5, 1901 in Chicago. He was one of
five children. After Walt¡¯s birth, the Disney family
moved to Missouri, where he spent most of his childhood. Young Walt began
to love nature and wildlife and became interested
in drawing at an early age.
The
young boy had talent for drawing, and many
people loved his pictures. His family wasn¡¯t very rich, so the young
artist often sold his drawings to neighbors to make extra money. Walt was encouraged
by his mother and older brother to pursue his artistic talents.
He pursued his art career by studying art and photography at McKinley High
School in Chicago.
In 1918, at the age of 16, Walt Disney joined the Red Cross and
was sent to France. There, he spent a year, driving an ambulance. But he wasn¡¯t
an ordinary ambulance driver.
His ambulance was very special. Yes, it was covered with Disney cartoons all over!
Once Walt returned from France, he began his career as an advertising cartoonist. In 1920, he created his first original animated cartoons. Later, he perfected a new method for combining live-action and animation.
He also started a small company called Laugh-O-Grams,
but the company fell bankrupt. But Walt didn¡¯t give up his dreams and headed to Hollywood to start
anew in 1923. Back then,
he had only 40 dollars in his pocket.

In LA, he produced a short film called Alice Comedies
and it was a great success. Soon, Walt Disney
became a recognized Hollywood figure.
In 1932, he produced the first color cartoon entitled Flowers and Trees
and won the first of his studio¡¯s Academy Awards. He continued to
produce a number of animated films including Snow White and the Seven
Dwarfs, Pinocchio, Dumbo, and Bambi. Disney also began television
production in 1954.
Walt Disney is a legend and a folk hero of the 20th century.
He touched the hearts of millions of people in the world through his
work during his life time. Through his work, Walt Disney brought joy and happiness to the people all
across the globe. Even though he passed away on December 15, 1966,
his imagination and dreams are
still alive. |
