Hillary Clinton is one of the most famous American women in the world. As wife of the former president Bill Clinton, she was the 42nd First Lady of the U.S. She also pursued her own career in politics by becoming a Senator for New York in 2000. Then, she ran for the presidential election in 2008 for the Democratic Party. Even though she failed to become the 44th President of America, people all over the world still respect her. Hillary Clinton will be the new Secretary of State in 2009.
Hillary Clinton was born on October 26 in 1947 in Chicago. With her two younger brothers, she spent a happy childhood. She was an active child who loved sports. Her parents encouraged her to study hard and to pursue any career that interested her. Hillary was interested in politics from an early age.

In 1969, Hillary entered Yale Law School. There, she met Bill Clinton. She graduated from Yale in 1973. Hillary and Bill Clinton got married in 1975 and the couple moved to Arkansas. Bill began his political career there and became governor of Arkansas in 1978. Hillary served as Arkansas¡¯ First Lady for 12 years.

In 1992, Hillary took on the title of the ¡°First Lady of the United States¡± when her husband became the 42nd President. She was not a typical First Lady who just smiled at the cameras. She continued to live an active life.

As First Lady, she used her power to bring attention to causes that she was interested in, including the rights of women and children worldwide. ¡°I suppose I could have stayed home and baked cookies and had tea. But what I decided to do was to fulfill my profession,¡± she once said.

Hillary traveled the world for 8 years as First Lady, visiting more than 80 countries. She met so many foreign leaders. She also visited villages, clinics and other remote areas to meet people in need.

Hillary Clinton continued her career in politics after her husband¡¯s presidency. She was elected United States Senator for the Democratic Party from New York on November 7, 2000. She became the first First Lady elected to the U.S. Senate in American history. She is also the first woman elected statewide in New York. This year, she ran for the American presidential election, but she lost to her rival Barack Obama.


Recently, she was nominated as Secretary of State under president-elect Barack Obama and she accepted the position. ¡°I congratulate him on the victory he has won. I throw my full support behind Barack Obama. Yes, we can and we will make history together as we write the next chapter in America¡¯s story,¡± said Hillary. Many countries all over the world are also welcoming her return to the world stage as Secretary of State.
