Cotton
candy looks like a fluffy mass of cotton. It is loved by many
children all around the world. They love the soft, sweet taste. And it comes
in various colors; white, pink,
yellow and blue! But who invented this amazing candy? And when it
was invented? If you want to know the answers, keep reading!
Cotton candy was invented more than 100 years ago. It was invented
by two American candy makers, William Morrison
and John C. Wharton in 1897. They invented a machine that heated sugar in a spinning bowl that had tiny holes in it. As the bowl
spun around, the caramelized sugar was forced
through the tiny holes, making
feathery candy that melts in the mouth. William
and John called the candy ¡°Fairy Floss.¡±
The
two men introduced the new candy
to the world at the St. Louis World¡¯s Fair in 1904. They sold it
for 25 cents a box.
That was a big amount of money back then. Despite the high price, people liked the new
candy very much. William and John sold about 68,655 boxes at the fair!
Around 1920, people started
calling it ¡°cotton candy.¡±
But in England, people called it ¡°candy floss.¡± It is still called
¡°fairy floss¡± in some countries today.
Over the years, people added colors to cotton candy.
The most popular color for cotton
candy is pink. You can also see other colors such as blue, yellow, purple
and green. People also added new flavors such as grape, strawberry,
banana and apple.
Cotton candy is purely sugar. But it usually
contains less sugar than a can of
soft drink! Even though it looks big,
it uses a small amount of sugar. It looks big because it contains
a lot of air.
