The
year 2009 is the Year of the Cow.
Let¡¯s learn some fun facts about the cow this
week!
¢º There are about 920 different kinds of cows in the world.
They were domesticated about 5,000 years ago.
¢º A cow is an adult female and a bull is an adult male. A baby cow is called
a ¡°calf.¡± Cattle is the name
for the whole cow family.
¢º A cow can climb up the stairs, but cannot climb down. This is because
its knees cannot bend properly to walk back down.
¢º A cow produces about 200,000 glasses
of milk in her lifetime.
¢º A cow usually spends 6-7 hours a day eating
cud and around 8 hours chewing it.
¢º Cows chew at least 50 times per minute.
On average, cows have more
than 40,000 jaw movements in a day.
¢º Cows have a good sense of smell and can smell
something up to 10 kilometers away.
¢º Cows
can live up to 25 years. You can guess the age of a cow that has horns by counting the number
of rings on the horns. The oldest
cow to date was Big Bertha, who
died just 3 months before her 49th birthday.
¢º Cows drink 114 liters of water and eat about 43 kilograms of feed per day.
¢º A cow has about 207 bones in its body.
¢º Cows are very social animals and they form large herds. They ¡°moo¡± and use
different body positions and facial expressions to communicate with each other.
¢º Cows produce about 100 million tons of hydrocarbonźȼö¼Ò annually by releasing gas
mostly by burping. They are one of
the main contributors to the hole
in the ozone layer. If the gas of
10 cows could be captured, it would provide enough heating for a small house
for a year. |
