Eugene O¡¯Neill was born on October 16, 1888 in New York City. As the
son of a popular actor, he spent the first 7 years of his life travelling all across the country with
his father. In 1906, he entered Princeton University, but he left
the school after less than a year.
After quitting school, he had various jobs including stage manager, actor, reporter
and sailor. Eugene began to write
plays in 1913. He released his first play Bound
East for Cardiff in 1914. That year, he entered Harvard University
to attend courses in dramatic technique. However, he left
the school after one year and did not complete the course.
In 1916, a theater company produced his play Bound East
for Cardiff. In the next few years, the theater put on nearly all of his short plays and he became
very famous. In 1920, his long play Beyond the Horizon was produced
in New York. Some of the critics praised the play and later
on in the year, it was awarded the Pulitzer Prize. Eugene received
the prize again in 1922 for Anna Christie and for the third time in
1928 for Strange Interlude. He also won the Nobel Prize for Literature
in 1936. He won numerous other honors during his lifetime.
Until his
death in 1953, Eugene O¡¯Neill wrote a number of great plays including
A Touch of the Poet, More Stately Mansions, The Iceman Cometh, A Long
Day¡¯s Journey into Night and A Moon for the Misbegotten. Most of these
were not published or produced during
his lifetime.
Today, Eugene O¡¯Neill is recognized as the first great American dramatist. He is also known
as one of the great dramatists of all time. He is still
called the father of modern American playwriting. |
