Winston
Churchill was a British politician, soldier, and artist. He is best known
for his courageous leadership as Prime Minister. He successfully led Britain
to victory in World War II.
During his lifetime, Churchill received numerous honors and decorations. He also won
the Nobel Prize for Literature
in 1953. Churchill is still a national hero in England.
He is considered one of the most influential people of the
20th century.
Winston Churchill was born on November 30, 1874 in Oxfordshire. His
father was the famous politician, Lord Randolph
Churchill. He attended Sandhurst, the Royal
Military College before he started a career as a soldier and politician.
In 1910, he became Home Secretary³»¹« Àå°ü. One year later, he left the
Home Office³»¹«ºÎ and became the First Lord of the AdmiraltyÇØ±º ´ë½Å. However,
he had to resign from the position during World War
I. In 1917, he became the Minister of Munition±º¼ö Àå°ü.
In
September, 1939, Nazi Germany declared war on Poland. Churchill refused to surrender to Nazi Germany
and the public supported him. He was appointed the First Lord
of the Admiralty again on September 3, 1939. He worked very hard throughout
the war, fighting against Nazi leader Adolf Hitler. He was
a brave and powerful leader and led Britain
to victory in World War II.
In May, 1940, he became Prime Minister and remained in office until
1945. In 1951, he became Prime Minister again.
Churchill received countless honors and decorations
throughout his lifetime. In 1953, Queen Elizabeth II granted him the dignity of Knighthood. He also received
an honorary citizenship of the
United States from President Kennedy in 1963.
Churchill
resigned in 1955, but remained a Member of Parliament until shortly before his death.
He spent much of his later years writing and painting. As well as his many political achievements, he also left
behind a number of books. My Early Life, Painting as a Pastime and
The River War are some of his most famous books.
Churchill especially wrote many books
about World War I and II. He also wrote a book about his father. In
1953, he received the Nobel Prize for Literature in recognition of his historical studies. Winston
Churchill died on January 24, 1965 at the age of 91. |
