There are 59 kinds of eagles in the world. The
Bald Eagle is one of the most common eagles.
- The Bald Eagle is not actually bald. Its head is covered
with white feathers. The word ¡°bald¡±
came from an old English word ¡°balde¡± meaning white.
- The head and tail feathers of a Bald Eagle
do not turn white until it becomes 4~5 years of age.
- The Bald Eagle is the national symbol of the United States.
It represents freedom. Bald Eagles can
be found in every state in
America, except Hawaii.
- The Bald Eagle is also called the American Eagle, Fishing Eagle,
Washington Eagle and White-headed Eagle.
- Bald Eagles have great eyesight that helps them
find food easily. They can see 4~7
times better than people.
- Fish are the Bald Eagles¡¯ favorite food. Sometimes they eat smaller
birds and snakes, too.
- The Bald
Eagle can kill a small deer and fly away with it.
- A Bald Eagle has about 7,000 feathers on its body.
- The Bald Eagle has long and powerful wings. Its wingspan is between 1.5~2
meters.
- Bald Eagles can fly about 105 km/h. They can reach a speed of up to 320 km/h when
diving.
- Female Bald Eagles lay 1~3 eggs
- during spring. The eggs hatch in about 35 days. Chicks usually begin to fly
at about 3 months of age.
- Females are a little larger than males. Females are about
90 centimeters tall and weigh about 6 kilograms,
while males are 80 centimeters tall and weigh about kilograms.
- Bald Eagles can live up to 25 years in the wild. They may live longer in captivity ? up to 40 years. |
