China,
with 1.3 billion people, is the world¡¯s
most populated nation. It is also well-known for having one
of the best Olympic sports teams in the world. Its team was one of
the best performers at the previous summer Olympic held
in Athens in 2004. However, before this year, no Olympic games had
ever been held in China. Finally on August 8, China¡¯s
long-cherished dream came
true.
The slogan for the Beijing 2008
Olympics is ¡°One World, One Dream.¡± The red emblem on the Olympic logo ¡°Dancing Beijing¡± combines a Chinese character
and an open armed figure inviting the world
to share Chinese culture.
The five
Olympic mascots represent children. Each
has a two-syllable rhyming name that expresses affection in China for young
children: Beibei for fish, Jingjing for Panda, Huanhuan for the Olympic flame, Yingying for
the Tibetan antelope, and Nini for the
swallow. Put together as
one word, all five names say ¡°Welcome to Beijing¡± in Chinese!
High-technology is one of
the three main themes of the 2008 summer
Olympics. The sporting events are broadcasting around the world
in high-definition television
images.
The second theme is Green Olympics. The Chinese capital is trying to make
the international festival as environmentally-friendly
as possible.
Lastly, the third major official theme for the Olympics
is ¡°People¡¯s Olympics¡± that bring together people from all over the
world in celebration of the Olympic
spirit and human harmony.
Also, being brought together at this historic 2008 Olympics is China¡¯s
rich past and exciting present. A great culture
is offering both its ancient traditions, its grand modern dreams and realities
to the world. All in all, the 2008 Olympic
Games are likely to be a transforming event for China¡¯s
image abroad and for its national self-perception. |
