This
week, I want to introduce you to a cool inventor. This man invented
the world¡¯s first automobile that moved by
using gasoline. His name is Karl
Benz. Does the last name sound familiar? Yes, we all know
the famous Benz cars. They are
one of the best cars in the world. Karl Benz is the founder of the car company.
Karl Benz was born on November 26, 1844 in Germany. His father was
a train driver. Sadly, Karl lived in a very
poor family.
But his mother gave him a great education. At a very young
age, Karl was interested in science. When he was 15 years
old, he was accepted to the University
of Karlsruhe in his hometown!
As he grew up, Karl wanted to follow in his father¡¯s footsteps. He
wanted to make fast and safe trains. But soon he changed his mind.
During Karl¡¯s times, people used horse-drawn carriages. Karl was thinking
of making a horseless carriage. He worked for many companies that
made a variety of machines. While
working for the companies, he learned so much about machines.
At
the age of 27, Karl opened his first shop. There, he invented and
fixed machines needed in
making buildings. His business wasn¡¯t doing well.
But he was getting closer to his dream. It was his dream to make a
horseless carriage.
By 1878, Karl had made the first car engine. He also invented
all the things you need to make a car run. Machines to control speed were made.
Machines needed to stop the car were made. Machines that start the
engine were made. The list is so long! Soon enough, a horseless
carriage was made! It was the first automobile. The complete car took 7 years
to make.
Of course, there were many
problems at first. Sometimes the engine stopped. And sometimes different
machines failed to work. However,
Karl worked hard to fix these problems. Actually every time he found a problem,
he made it better and better.
Soon, people across Germany loved his
automobile. His sons followed his dreams. Together, the Benz family
became Germany¡¯s first car maker!
On April 4, 1929, Karl Benz died peacefully at home at the
age of 84. History still remembers him as the man who created the
world¡¯s first automobile. |
