Nowadays, we don¡¯t get shocked when we see an airplane in the sky. But, a long time ago, people dreamed of flying. Back in 1903, the U.S. Army tried to create an airplane. Sadly, it couldn¡¯t fly. Scientists thought it would take about 10 million years to make an airplane that could fly. Believe it or not, only 8 days after the army failed, two men were successful. They flew the first airplane with a man inside. The inventors were Wilbur Wright and his younger brother Orville.

The Wright brothers¡¯ plane had a propeller, and it stayed in the air for 12 seconds on December 17, 1903. It was called the Wright Flyer. Although this was an amazing sight, only 5 people saw the first airplane. Back then, not many people knew about their incredible invention in the U.S.

Wilbur Wright was born on April 16, 1867, and his younger brother Orville was born on August 19, 1871. The two brothers were always interested in machines. They often saw their mother repairing things. She was great at fixing bicycles, stoves, and many things in the house. So, as young kids, the Wright brothers even made their own bicycles! Later, they made some money by opening up a bicycle shop.

One day, the Wright brothers wanted to make a machine that could fly. So they studied birds and how they flew. Then they started making a variety of wings and propellers to test. They called in everyone interested in making an airplane. The greatest minds in the U.S. wanted to work with the brothers.

Five years passed, and their airplane had improved a lot. Younger brother Orville stayed in the air for one hour and two minutes! Older brother Wilbur died of fever in 1912. But Orville continued to work hard. He died in 1948. Thanks to the Wright brothers¡¯ efforts, we can go anywhere by airplane today.

The first ever plane made by the Wright brothers still remains in the U.S. You can see it at the National Air Museum in Washington.
